2024 Oscars: All the Nominations

1/23/2024 • 5 min read

Oscar Movie Week
 | Cinemark

As a movie year, 2023 was full of surprises, with the calendar dominated by the smash success of Barbenheimer. BARBIE and OPPENHEIMER were both propelled to the billion-dollar mark and into cultural icon status. Titles like POOR THINGS and THE HOLDOVERS made their marks at the end of the year, and now all four of those movies are Oscar frontrunners.

The 2024 Oscar Nominations honor a wide range of movies, in ways that are both widely expected and totally surprising. OPPENHEIMER leads the pack with 13 nominations; POOR THINGS has 11, BARBIE has ten, and THE HOLDOVERS has five.

There are surprises, too, such as the first Oscar nomination (really!) for Wes Anderson, whose Netflix short THE WONDERFUL STORY OF HENRY SUGAR is nominated. And GODZILLA MINUS ONE scored a Visual Effects nomination, making it the first Godzilla movie to get an Oscar nomination.

Here are all the 2024 Oscar nominations. You can see many of these movies during our Oscar Movie Week, passes for which are on sale now!

The Best Picture Oscar Nominees

Let's get straight to the big question. What movie will win the 2024 Best Picture Oscar? The Best Picture nominees for 2024 are:

AMERICAN FICTION, Ben LeClair, Nikos Karamigios, Cord Jefferson and Jermaine Johnson, Producers
ANATOMY OF A FALL, Marie-Ange Luciani and David Thion, Producers
BARBIE David Heyman, Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Robbie Brenner, Producers
THE HOLDOVERS, Mark Johnson, Producer
KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON, Dan Friedkin, Bradley Thomas, Martin Scorsese and Daniel Lupi, Producers
MAESTRO, Bradley Cooper, Steven Spielberg, Fred Berner, Amy Durning and Kristie Macosko Krieger, Producers
OPPENHEIMER, Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan, Producers
PAST LIVES, David Hinojosa, Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler, Producers
POOR THINGS, Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone, Producers
THE ZONE OF INTEREST, James Wilson, Producer

OPPENHEIMER is certainly the most obvious Best Picture frontrunner, but the award isn't entirely locked up. A different movie could still win Best Picture. Want to know how?

How Does Oscar Voting Work?

Here's how Oscar voting works. The Academy uses a Ranked Choice Vote, or preferential ballot, to determine each winner. A movie needs 50% plus one vote to win. Each member submits a ballot with the nominees ranked in order of preference. But it's not as simple as just seeing which movie gets the most votes.

With ten films nominated, there's a good chance that a winner will not emerge based only on first choices. In that case, ballots are redistributed from the bottom up. Let's say THE XYZ MOVIE came in last based on tallies of the top picks for each ballot. Then the votes for that film are redistributed to whatever movies were ranked second on ballots that had THE XYZ MOVIE as their top pick. The video below shows how this works.

If no winner has emerged, then the lowest-scoring movie is knocked out. The tallies remain, and the ballots for the film with the fewest votes are redistributed again according to the number two movie on each ballot. If a ballot's second pick has been knocked out, then the movie ranked number 3 on that ballot gets a vote. This repeats until there's a winner.

So even if many voters like BARBIE or KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON enough to rank it second or third, that movie could still win.
