Our Most Anticipated 2022 Movies

12/3/2021 • 5 min read

After two years in which movie release dates constantly shifted, 2022 is set to be an amazing year for movies. There are some titles coming which we've waited quite a long time to see — like TOP GUN: MAVERICK — and some we thought we might never get to see, like UNCHARTED. With dramas, comedies, action, animation, horror, and new efforts from acclaimed filmmakers, the next 12 months are absolutely packed with new movies we can't wait to see.

So here are our most anticipated movies of 2022. They're listed in order of release.

It's been ten years since Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette reunited for a new SCREAM movie. This is the first film in the series since the death of creator Wes Craven, but directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (READY OR NOT) are well-primed to take over the tale of the bloody haunting of the town of Woodsboro. [January 14]

Jackass Forever

Over the course of the movies spun off from the crazily crass MTV comedy series, Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O and the rest of the Jackass crew have become increasingly self-aware about the ways that age plays on their insane antics. That has added a poignant layer to the continually eye-popping stunts and pranks in the JACKASS movies, and we can't wait to see how they give the series a proper send-off here. [February 4]

Death on the Nile

We could use some glamour right now. Enter Kenneth Branagh with a new adaptation of one of Agatha Christie's most notable murder mysteries. An all-star cast including Gal Gadot, Annette Bening, Russell Brand and Armie Hammer joins director/star Branagh on this deadly trip down the Nile. [February 11]

Tom Holand leads one of two major and long-awaited video game movies this year. UNCHARTED puts Holland into the lead role of Sony's blockbuster action/adventure series, playing globe-trotting treasure hunter Nathan Drake. He's joined by Mark Wahlberg, and Antonio Banderas. [February 18]

The Batman

Director Matt Reeves takes the Caped Crusader in a very different direction from previous movie incarnations. Robert Pattinson appears as Bruce Wayne and Batman in this deliciously dark tale of vengeance and justice. Zoë Kravitz appears as Catwoman, Paul Dano plays the Riddler, Colin Farrell is Penguin, Jeffrey Wright plays Commissioner Gordon, and Andy Serkis turns up as Alfred Pennyworth. [March 4]

The Lost City

ROMANCING THE STONE is one of the great '80s comedy/adventure movies, and this caper looks like a modern companion piece. Sandra Bullock stars as novelist Loretta Sage, who is kidnapped by an oddball billionaire (Daniel Radcliffe) who thinks that her novel is actually a treasure map. Enter the Fabio-esque cover model for Sage's books — played by Channing Tatum — who tries to come to her rescue. [March 25]

The Northman

Filmmaker Robert Eggers has created nightmares in his movies THE WITCH and THE LIGHTHOUSE. His new movie is a bloody rampage of Nordic revenge as Alexander Skarsgård plays a warrior bent on avenging the death of his father (Ethan Hawke) while also rescuing his mother (Nicole Kidman). [April 22]

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Benedict Cumberbatch returns, under the direction of famed filmmaker Sam Raimi, as the Sorcerer Supreme of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel has slowly positioned Strange as the successor to Iron Man, in terms of being a central figure in Marvel's movies, and so we expect some massive events in this sequel. [May 6]

Legally Blonde 3

Sometimes a second sequel to a very popular comedy is reason to be skeptical. But Reese Witherspoon isn't known for committing to movies that don't have a strong concept and script. So this third LEGALLY BLONDE movie, which sees the star return as Elle Woods, with Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor writing the script, is reason to rejoice. [May 20]

Top Gun: Maverick

Top Gun Maverick

Virtually everything has changed in the world of aerial warfare since the original TOP GUN topped the box office in the mid-'80s. Fortunately, one thing that has not changed is Tom Cruise's dedication to creating unique, big entertainment. This could be the highest-flying movie of the year. [May 27]

Jurassic World Dominion

The end of JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM showed dinosaurs escaping out into the wild of our world. So what happens when the genetically recreated creatures get to roam around the planet millions of years after going extinct? This new movie will show us! [June 10] (Jurassic World: Dominion — Everything You Need to Know)

Pixar goes into a new direction with the story of the man who inspired the Buzz Lightyear toys in the TOY STORY movies. Chris Evans voices the "real" Buzz Lightyear — an astronaut whose experiences are far beyond anything most humans ever imagined to be possible. [June 17]

Thor: Love and Thunder

Thor Love and Thunder

Director Taika Waititi (THOR: RAGNAROK) is back to direct the fourth movie starring Marvel's god of thunder. But there's a lot going on here beyond the continuation of Thor's story. For one, Natalie Portman returns as Jane Foster — and it seems like she will take up the hammer Mjolnir herself! [July 8]

We don't have to say much more than that this is the third movie from writer/director Jordan Peele (GET OUT, US). Good thing we don't have to say anything else because details on this movie are locked up tight; we don't know anything about the story. The movie stars Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer and Steven Yeun and we expect it will be one of the most talked-about movies of the year. [July 22]

Black Adam

The Rock has been planning to play DC's villain-turned-antihero, Black Adam, for many years, and the movie is nearly here! In addition to seeing one of the world's biggest movie stars play one of the meanest characters in the DC Universe, we'll also get to meet the Justice Society of America, with members like Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo), and Hawkman (Aldis Hodge). [July 29]

Don't Worry Darling

Olivia Wilde follows her hit BOOKSMART with this psychological thriller starring Harry Styles and Florence Pugh. They play a couple in the 1950s who, despite being the ideal couple to all onlookers, find their lives changed by a secret. Olivia Wilde also appears, as do Gemma Chan, KiKi Layne, Nick Kroll and Chris Pine. [September 23]

Mission: Impossible 7

Two Tom Cruise movies on one list? Absolutely! Especially when this second title sees the producer and star reuniting with writer/director Christopher McQuarrie for the latest chapter in one of the greatest action movie series of all time. [September 30]

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse - Part One

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

One of the best superhero movies ever made — maybe the best? — gets the sequel treatment! Miles Morales teams up with Spider-Gwen once again for a dimension-hopping adventure. They are joined by Miguel O'Hara, aka a major Spider-character from the far future, and will likely meet major and minor characters who are sure to delight Spider-Man fanatics of all ages. [October 7]

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

It seems like it's been a lot longer than four years since BLACK PANTHER came to the big screen, even with the character's appearance in the last AVENGERS movies. Production on this sequel moved forward even following the death of star Chadwick Boseman. We don't know how the story of WAKANDA FOREVER will unfold, but it is certainly one of the most anticipated titles of the year. [November 11]
