Just in time for the holidays, Disney is set to unveil a new animated treat to audiences young and old. STRANGE WORLD is an original action-adventure that will come to theatres later this year, though nearly every detail about the story is still being kept under wraps.
We know virtually nothing about the newest film from the studio’s animation arm beyond concept art, very basic plot details, and the name of the family at the center of the story. STRANGE WORLD follows the Clade family: legendary explorers who must journey through uncharted and treacherous territory full of fantastical creatures, though the differences between the family members may threaten to dismantle the mission.
Currently, STRANGE WORLD is set for a theatrical release on November 23.
Not yet! Disney only just announced the movie. Along with that announcement was one piece of concept art — seen just above — and that's all we've seen of the movie so far.
Both the writer and director of STRANGE WORLD have established careers with Disney. Director Don Hall and screenwriter Qui Nguyen previously collaborated on RAYA AND THE LAST DRAGON, released just this past year. Hall, in particular, has quite the repertoire with Disney: he directed BIG HERO 6, wrote MEET THE ROBINSONS, and has credits on MOANA, RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET, THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG, and THE EMPEROR’S NEW GROOVE. He also created the BIG HERO 6 spinoff series "Baymax"!
Don Hall has stated that part of his inspiration for STRANGE WORLD was derived from the pulp magazines he read as a kid. Hall said: “I loved reading the old issues of pulps growing up. They were big adventures in which a group of explorers might discover a hidden world or ancient creatures. They’ve been a huge inspiration for STRANGE WORLD.”
For context: during the first half of the 20th century, popular fiction stories were printed on cheap, wood pulp paper, thus leading to the term “pulp magazine.” It will certainly be interesting to see exactly how Hall’s inspiration from pulp magazines will translate into STRANGE WORLD.
